Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique is widely used for flow visualization. It yields instantaneous velocity field measurements in a cross-section of the flow. In this intro lecture I will briefly introduce the basic principles underlying PIV, discuss possible sources of errors, and explain how to adapt it for tracking discrete particles in granular flows. I will also discuss the techniques developed for volumetric PIV.
