Modeling biofilms - proteins and bacteria


The aim of this project is to determine the microscopic mechanisms that govern the dynamical evolution of selected protein and bacterial biofilms in a combined theoretical and experimental approach.  The theoretical models describe the entire proteins or bacteria as single particles with internal degrees of freedom. By atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry and scattering techniques, we characterize the mobility of adsorbed proteins and the morphology of the biofilms as a function of parameters that influence protein interaction, e.g. substrate composition.
